Killer Whales Junior Prep

We are excited to announce a brand new program called Killer Whales Junior Prep!

Do you have a child that loves to swim and is itching to be a part of a team this summer but is not quite ready for the swim team? This might be just the program for you!

What? Swimmers are encouraged to join us to work hard and have fun while learning freestyle, backstroke and other important swimming concepts. Over the course of the summer, swimmers will make huge strides in swimming with the goal of being able to swim both freestyle and backstroke “legally”, confidently and independently. If the swimmer would like, we encourage them to participate in a swim meet when they are ready! At any point during the swim season, swimmers that achieve our goal are invited to move up to the swim team, if they like.

Who? Swimmers who are excited to learn to swim and want a challenging but fun team atmosphere this summer. Killer Whales Junior Prep is for swimmers who are already comfortable in the water but are not quite ready for the swim team.

Prerequisites for Junior Prep:

  • Swimmers must be happy and comfortable in the water.
  • Ages 4 and up recommended
  • Must be fully potty trained (not in swim diapers)
  • Must be able to travel relatively straight for at least 10-15 feet in any manner without putting feet down or holding onto the wall. Underwater, doggy paddle, kicking on back, etc. are all great. There will be a swim check before the season starts.
  • Must feel comfortable in water that is over their head.
  • Must be able to follow directions, wait their turn and stay with the group.

*If swimmers do not meet these prerequisites, private or small group swim lessons are recommended. More information will be provided separately.

Who are the instructors? Junior coaches who are specially trained, plus the head instructor, Devon Barker, a seasoned swim lesson instructor and former swim team coach .

What is a practice like? We will begin by talking about the practice goals while we are actively warming up. Swimmers will be assigned to a small group and will work to learn and fine-tune new skills. We will focus on fun, safety and a positive environment.

What is the schedule? Junior Prep will run from May 22 through July 17th. Practices will last 45 minutes and will be held Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week from 4:45-5:30 PM. (15 minutes of dry-land, 30 minutes of swimming).

Dates to Remember:

Saturday, May 20th, Noon-1PM - Kickoff at the pool. You will have a chance to meet and play games with the coaches and learn more about the program. A brief swim skills check will be completed to be sure your child can safely and independently swim in any manner possible for 10-15 feet.

Monday, May 22 - First day of practice

Monday, May 29 - Memorial Day, no practice.

Friday, June 30-Wednesday July 5 - Junior Prep will be on vacation. Happy Independence Day!
